Roger Smith earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education at Wayne State University. While at WSU, he studied trombone with Joseph Skrzynski, voice with Margit Kormendy and conducting with Dr. Joseph Labuta and Dr. Harry M. Langsford. Roger was “Doc” Langsford’s Assistant Director of both the Men’s Glee Club and Chamber Singers on their respective European tours. He has also studied conducting with Dr. Greg Cunningham and choral literature with Dr. Michael Mitchell, both at Oakland University. Also at OU, Roger received his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and served as Assistant Principal and Principal from 2004 until his retirement from his alma mater, Ferndale High School, in 2017. Prior to his administrative duties, Roger taught band, orchestra and choir at FHS from 1983 through 2005. He has also served his home church, Zion Lutheran in Ferndale, for the past 15 years as Chancel Choir director.

Roger met his wife, Cecelia, at Wayne State University as they were both studying music. They sang in Chamber Singers as well as a variety of choral ensembles and have been making beautiful music together ever since. They live in Pleasant Ridge, while their two sons, Gordon and Gregory, live in Los Angeles, both pursuing careers in music, sound design, writing, comedy, acting and composition (and anything else to make a buck). Roger is incredibly proud of Cecelia as she will retire at the end of this school year after more than 30 years of elementary music teaching and can finally devote herself to knitting, cooking and golfing with her husband!

Roger was thrilled and honored to be the Associate Conductor of the Langsford Men’s Chorus from 2007 to 2015, reuniting with close friend and colleague, Steve SeGraves. They were “back row” mates in the WSU Glee Club/Chamber Singers and Roger recalls lots of laughs and incredible singing as this “low bass and high tenor” shared some life-changing moments while learning from the best, Dr. Harry M. Langsford. He is very happy to be back working with the LMC and making music with lots of old and new friends.
